Location In northern Bergen County near the New York state line, Old Tappan is one of New Jersey’s northernmost towns. Beautiful Lake Tappan enhances the town’s considerable appeal. Geography/Terrain Covering about 4 square miles, Old Tappan is a neighborly community on the shores of peaceful Lake Tappan. Oakes Park has a quaint gazebo and 9/11 memorial and is a popular summer picnic spot. Stonepoint Park has four ball fields, a running track and bocce court, a well equipped children’s playground and a community center, home to many town events. Old Tappan also has a golf course, 3 baseball fields and basketball courts, 3 athletic fields and an ice skating rink. Locals enjoy boating, swimming, kayaking and ice skating on Lake Tappan and exploring the Hudson River region. Just 5 miles east, the Hudson River is a good place to kayaking, canoeing boating or sailing, and the riverbank parkland runs for several miles. Just west of Old Tappan is Wood Dale County Park, with a lake, a bike path, tennis courts, picnic spots and a children’s playground.

 Special Attractions/Events Old Tappan is a family-friendly community, with a full round of sporting and seasonal events for locals to enjoy together. The annual Town Day celebration in Stonepoint Park is a lot of fun, and children look forward to the Easter Egg hunt each summer. A regular Farmer’s Market is also held throughout the summer months. Nearby centers are easy to get to for an evening’s entertainment or for large scale cultural events or shopping; much of Old Tappan’s charm lies in the fact that it is a simple community with a slower pace of life and less modern conveniences than larger centers. Interesting Facts/Historic Buildings and Places The Old Tappan region was originally home to the Lenape Native Americans, who were joined by the Delaware later on. Originally named “Tappan” as an Anglicization of “Tuphanne”, the Delaware Indian word for the region that literally means cold water, the settlement became “Old Tappan” in the nineteenth century to distinguish itself from from Tappan in New York State.
